Results of Club Hill Climb - 17th October 2010 - Course: KH35 Newnham

The club hill climb always throws up some surprises, with riders' age and physique having a major influence on performance, but Matt Plant even surprised himself to achieve first place. Clearly power-to-weight ratio helped Adrian Tayles & Richard Kenworthy finish ahead of some more established time trialers, while Phil Scott and Peter Wright could not be separated, even down to 2 decimal places! The best time of the event was set by Hywel Davies, riding as a private entry this season, just 4 seconds inside the time of Matt Plant.

Readers of Cycling Weekly, published October 14th, will have seen this article on VAM Scores (Velocity Ascended Metres). These figures are for the top performing hill-climbers in the country, so it's interesting to compare the numbers. Courtesy of Peter Wright's GPS we have Newnham Hill as having an elevation change of 59.7 meters (196 ft) and a length of 900m (0.55 miles). The steepest section is 15% (1 in 6.6) for 100m and the average for the course is a mere 6.6% (1 in 15). However, the VAM Scores only take account of the time and elevation, not the distance.
